Review: Rock and Rose (karaoke review series 3)

Think of the old CBGB's vibe, or something like Arlene's Grocery, with walls papered with old news articles on rockers or rocker babes, and hot models, but take out all the graffiti and years of band stickers and old beer and whiskey stains, bring it to the Upper East to 53rd street and you've got Rock and Rose. Part of my karaoke review series, this former Japanese style karaoke haunt went through a transformation in late Summer 2011 when it switched owners and became a brash, no nonsense, punk rock style karaoke stop, with live band karaoke (courtesy of Crash Course Karaoke, hosted by Brandon Bain). It sports a small stage in the back where all the magic happens, with two mics, screens for your sing-a-long pleasure, and lighting, so anyone with a camera/cameraphone can document it for YouTube posterity.

Outside of the bar, there is a side lounge area with generous seating, but no view of the stage, and some seating with full view of the stage.

The food menu is small, but you're not really there to eat and the drink menu is pretty decent, as well as the drink prices for the area.

You've got to pay per song, cash. No exceptions.

Now for the aficionado's breakdown...

The sound system is pretty good, so you don't have to worry about screaming into the mic.
The song list (non band) is the same offered in Pulse & Karaoke Cave.
They do not offer pitch shifting.
They do offering a catering menu, which is different than their bar menu.
Live band karaoke happens on Thursday nights. Their song list is available here.

They tote themselves as a live band venue as well, so head over to their website and take a look at their calendar for a listing of all their upcoming events, and go check them out.

Jan Loves... "Marilyn Convertible Dresses"

Those that know me, know that I love value. Yes, I understand sales and discounts are important, but so is getting your monies worth and on occasion, I have no problem paying full price on something I know I'm going to get a lot of use out of.

Queue the Marilyn Convertible Dress. It's basically a circle skirt with two 6 ft pieces of fabric that can be used to create whatever top you choose, or addition if worn as a skirt.

Awarded "Best Plus Sized Designer" by Full Figured Fashion Week, Monif C. has created something so versatile for women sizes 8 - 24, that we at MMC had to give her a shout out. Beyond the look versatility of the dress, there's one added bonus of a dress that can fit women through a spectrum of sizes 8-24: value.

I discovered the Marilyn Convertible dress (which is part of Monif C. staple line) while trying to find clothing that would fit me. In the past 6 months, I've lost 30 pounds, and dropping. Those that have been there know what this generally means: shopping for more clothes. Traditionally clothing is sized for one size, or a pair of sizes (14-16, 16-18, etc.), unless you're talking about a "one size fits all/most" piece, which is overlarge and generally not very form fitting. This dress, with it's ability to fit sizes 8-24 with it's adjustable 6 foot long "straps" made buying it a real value. Instead of having to buy something new for every two sizes I pass, here's an item I can purchase that I can use, no matter the changes of my size, and still look awesome in whichever style I choose for the day! Thus far, there are over 50 different wrap combinations available for the dress, and counting. Boredom will not be an issue. Be mindful that the size range is in regards to the standard circle skirt dresses, rather than the ruched skirts, although they are beautiful as well, is offered in set sizes.

The full price of these dresses generally goes from $195 - $235 depending on the style, however they're having an "end of the season" sale, where the dresses are going for $136.50 - $161.25, so it's a good time to get what you want without spending a fortune.

Another great thing about the Monif C. website is they offer youtube videos on how to tie the dresses, and encourage their customers to create their own individual ties as well. If you're just starting out, the youtube videos take a lot of the guesswork out of the ties. I would highly suggest checking them out.

Because it is the end of the year, the staff is preparing for the new collection, which, from what they've told me, will be available for sale in January, so if the remaining colors aren't for you, you can always wait until next month for the new colors.

If you happen to be in the New York City area and are unsure about buying a dress, you can always stop over to their boutique, which is listed on their website. Their staff will be happy to teach you three standard wraps and have you loving your dress like I have mine. (I now own three, just so you know, I'm not kidding)

If you're still debating, here's one of their "How-To" videos available on YouTube. There are plenty more there, so go take a look.

Don't quote me on this, but I think if you get your dress today, you might be able to have it in time for Christmas, depending on where you are in the US. If not, you can always buy it as a new year's party outfit.

Review: Karaoke Cave (karaoke review series 2)

I never thought I'd find myself hidden away in some kind of back room or basement in some party doing of all things KARAOKE, but these days, instead of hidden poker rooms, I'm in hidden karaoke rooms.

Ok, not quite.

But that's what Karaoke Cave feels like.

The crowd is generally young, generally in their early 20's. Most likely students from the neighboring NYU and New School campuses. They check for ID at the door on Fridays and Saturday nights, so come at the ready, because John, the bouncer, although a pretty nice guy, will not let you in because you "look" like you're over 21.

The drink prices are actually reasonable, which makes sense why you see a lot of college kids here. The song selection is the same as in Pulse Karaoke and at the Watering Hole, so if you know their book, you know this one. Always check on their blackboard on beer specials though. They offer shots and beer specials every so often, so it's always worth a look. All alcohol orders will get you a free song ticket. All song tickets by themselves, however are $1 a piece.

The food can get confusing. For their menu, it depends on the restaurant upstairs. Before 10PM, the menu is based on whichever restaurant is presently residing in the space. In the time I've hung out at The Cave, it's changed twice. Now it's a Korean restaurant, and the offerings aren't bad and they do have vegetarian options for those who are. If you don't know what something is, ask the bar staff and they'll help you out. After 10PM, however, it's standard bar food - wings, fries, etc.

Now for my aficionados out there...

The sound bounces off the walls, since there's little insulation in the bar area.
There is no stage, so no focal point, if you're into such things.
You can get them to pitch shift your songs.
They do offer a Japanese and Spanish song selection, for all you linguist out there.
If you ever choose to sing "You're the Inspiration" by Chicago, the track is faulty, seriously.

One more thing...this place is NOT wheelchair accessible. Despite the ramp at the entryway, to get in or out of The Cave requires an additional flight of stairs inside that you must walk down to reach the place.

Go ahead and sing your heart out!

Review: White Rabbit

Last Friday night I went over to a birthday party on East Houston Street at a place called White Rabbit. Nice white washed space with a decent sized bar, DJ booth, and rabbit inspired artwork on the walls. I really felt like I should have been in my Alice in Wonderland Halloween costume, then again, I like stuff like that, and it wasn't overly done. The moderate light setting is very typical of most bar/lounges and the decor is airy and open, so it's a decent space for a moderately sized party. In our case, we're talking about 20 in our group, 15 in another group, and the average lounge patrons, getting to be something about 50+ people thereabouts.

The music was a good mix of 90's hip hop to present day with a touch of reggae, and it looked as though the usual crowd was primarily Asian for the exception of my party, who were the ones who got everyone off their feet and dancing (if you were there this past Friday, yeah, I was part of THAT party, and with that kind of music playing, you really should NOT have been sitting down). The only thing about the music is the sound kept on going in and out. DJ, get a better pair of headphones so you don't have to do that, please, it's annoying. Thank you.

The bartender, I have to say, is absolutely awesome. No complaints. He should get a raise. If the owner is reading this, seriously, you have a great barman on your hands, and this is from someone who has grown up in the industry. Keep him!

Overall? I'd stop by again to see how this place is when not influenced by my friend's overwhelmingly dance party influence. We're a fun bunch, which, I will have to admit, might have skewed my judgement.

Review: Pulse Lounge

New York holds a lot of secrets, and I'm not just talking about the hidden ones like Milk & Honey or the other "knock three times and hit the buzzer twice" places. I'm talking about places that are generally in plain view, but maybe not located on street level.

Take Pulse Lounge, which is located just below street level in the heart of Times Square. It's pretty swanky for a karaoke bar with it's own dress code: no tims, no plastic sandals, no busted sneakers, no dew rags. Yes, like many genuine karaoke lounges, it does have private rooms and offer food and drink packages and the bar area does charge $1 per song. Yes, you can charge the songs to your tab (score!).

You have to be 21 to enter. No ID, no luck (sorry). The prices are actually reasonable for the area and there are occasional specials, so check their website, facebook, and twitter. It's a good after work party spot (if you have a bunch of karaoke singers in your crew, or exhibitionists - close enough).

Now for my aficionado, here's the breakdown...

The speaker monitors on stage generally don't work, so sometimes you get better audio quality off stage than on.
You cannot adjust the pitch in the bar area. I have not tried in the private rooms.
On Friday nights, the cue can get really long, but the bartenders are good at trying to keep things moving.
On the rare occasion the speakers will go out, but it will be momentary.

No go out and party like a rock star. Whatever you sing on stage will be heard upstairs. They pipe everything going on from the stage to street level passersby above anyway. Enjoy!

Fete de l'Hurricane review

I was invited by my mega talented friend and fellow dancer, Christina Noel Reaves to view her work at the Fete de l'Hurricane showcase a The Red Bean Studio. I was definitely in for a treat because the showcase had dance pieces that ran a gamut of styles. From the improvisational to the hyper-choreographed to performance art. This showcase also comes with the mini-party pre-during- and post performance complete with beers, soda, snacks, and their signature rice and red beans. The curator and co-owner of The Red Bean Studio, Carrie J. Brown is the mastermind behind this performance slash party based on the concept of Hurricane parties that is common in Florida. (The irony is that this particular showcase was actually postponed b/c of Hurricane Irene)

Here are my thoughts on each dance that I saw at Fete de l'Hurricane:

Man from Mars - choreography & performance by Tony Fraser and Jaime Shannon
I've not seen a performance of swing dance before so this is a treat! Both performers move their feet at lightning speeds filled with intricate rhythm steps, dips, and excellent partnering. This dance made me smile.

spice - concept & performance by Carlos A. Cruz Velázquez
Carlos brought out his bag and showed the audience the contents of his bag. This improvisational humor of this performer was like a cheerleader. He effectively convinced the audience to cheer him on when he did his numerous head rolls. He talked about his disdain for serving in a restaurant on a night like Fashion's Night Out because of the demands the customer places on him by throwing glass violently into a garbage can that he dragged out from behind the audience.

Black and Whitish (an Improv experiment) - concept by Carrie J. Brown and performed by Laura Bartczak, Andrea Jane Dispenziere, Amy Larson, Michelle Pellizon, Nellie Rainwater, Heather Wigmore, Stephen Xue
I was pleasantly surprised that this piece was all improv because the structure of ideas, the use of a newspaper prop, and the flow of the improvisations from start to finish appeared to have a clear sense of beginning, middle, and end with multiple relationships that develop between dancers in the form of solos, duets, trios, and group. I kept trying to find the leader or the catalyst to continue on to the next idea and group formation. Sometimes I would find the catalyst and knew that a change would happen. I'm curious to see what would happen if the formula for the piece were done with audience participation.

The Adventures of Donna Quixote Part 1: Daphne

This solo performer has a way of moving that is interesting to watch. A natural yet silently awkward but organic and grounded. Towards the end of the piece she brought out puppets and lit the puppets so the shadows illuminated in the background. This puppetry reminded me of sitting in a hot stuffy playhouse in Jakarta, Indonesia as a 6 year old and while we watched traditional Indonesian puppetry using intricately handmade paper puppets against a white screen so all you see are the shadows of the puppets.

There's a Beast in Me

Performance by Elizabeth Beres, Georgey Souchette, Clare Cook, Lonnie Poupard, Casey Loomis, Jeremy Jae Neal
Raw. Violent. Sexual. Tender. Toxic. Obsessive. The performers in this piece move with great athleticism and possess animalistic behavior akin to a pack of wolves complete with vocal singing. The partnering between the female and male was a seamless melding of bodies in motion. I always try to look at the title and the program notes after I see a dance and when I saw the title, I thought how appropriate that this piece is titled There's a Beast in Me because these performers were half beast, half human.

Review of "MUD! The Musical Comedy"

"MUD! The Musical Comedy" is an Off Broadway breathe of fresh air, but at a cost... your pricey attire. "MUD!" is the brainchild of Scott Lyons & Company and it's complete with a wide range of unexpected, captivating characters.

While some may sum up the show as a plethora of lesbian sensuality, it truly has a fun and entertaining plot that will hold your attention. The story is mostly based around Sister Isabella coming to terms with who she might be, her naivety when it comes to 'God' and her manifest destiny to save the church.

While the story is about the plight of Sister Isabella (Played by Monica Hunken), my favorite character is Raina (played by Raina Von Waldenburg), The Mud Wresting Coach. Raina really steals the show with her perfect comedic timing. The audiences will be delighted by her humorous presence and excellent character creation. For you Gleeks, Raina will remind you of a sexy Sue Sylvester.

"MUD!" as a whole production, is an excellent departure from the boring, drab Off Broadway shows your friends are constantly inviting you to. I would also add that while it's called a 'musical' it's more of a musical 'satire'. Where the show lacks in areas at performance perfection, it makes up tremendously with an entertaining cast.

The show at it's best is a bit campy, but the kind of campy that will attract a cult following. Another plus is that "MUD!" had the best lighting and sound i've experienced in Off Broadway theatre as of yet. "MUD! The Musical Comedy" is a must-see with your guy or gal-4-gal pals... But don't wear anything delicate. =)

The Wedding Post by Alaine

When I'm not busy choreographing, dancing, performing, or teaching dance... I make brides feel and look pretty with airbrush make up. I've become a fan of wedding related things (magazines, TV shows, websites, blogs) over the years from being in the wedding industry.

If you are getting married you may enjoy this list:

1) BHLDN
Anthropologie's new Bridal site. Purchase whimisical bridesmaids dresses, unique gowns, accessories, footwear, and lingerie. I love Anthropologie so I was so excited when they came out with this line.

2) Kate Spade
They have the cutest shoes ever! These shoes are meant to be shown to everyone. After the party's over, you can wear these shoes with a cute pair of jeans to dress up a casual outfit or a cocktail dress.
An important tip: Please DO NOT wear flip flops at a wedding. If your feet hurt take your shoes off - every woman at the end of a wedding has their shoes off on the dance floor anyway.

I love to save money. Catch me at a sale anywhere and I'll be checking out the sale rack to see what I can score at a ridiculously low price. These days, the stigma of sales has gone to the waist side. With designer strongholds like Coach, Prada, BCBGMAXAXRIA, and Armani offering up their goods at discount, not only at their outlet stores, but to sample sale vendors, people like myself can pick up a $88 coach 15 in' laptop case for more than 50% off or a $175 toki doki backpack for more than 75% off.

These aren't fantasy, once-in-a-blue-moon buys, this is a regular occurrence (if you know where to look).
Here's a list of some of the ones we love. Click on the name to join them for free.

HauteLook: Catering to both men and women's fashion, this sample sale site also offers home furnishings, children's wear, make-up and accessories, and (like many other sites recently) discount vacation packages. Their site is easy to navigate through and generally their sales start at 8AM PT/11AM ET. The sales generally last for 3 days or until they run out of product, whichever comes first.

Ideeli: Although a somewhat smaller site that HauteLook, Ideeli does offer more of the lesser publicly known high end brands with the occasional Michael Kors or Donna Karen thrown in. Although they do offer getaway packages, Ideeli and Jetsetter (parent company "Gilt Groupe") offer far better locations, in our opinion. They also offer an option to buy into a preview tier, where you get first crack at sales before the general memberships do.

Beyond The Rack: Similar to the feel of HauteLook, Beyond the Rack offers mostly women's apparel and accessories (heavy on the footwear). Their prices swing from reasonable to sometimes out of the ballpark, so it's good to catch their sales once they hit market. Their sales generally don't last as long as the others. Sometimes only lasting for 24 - 48 hours from release.

RueLala: Rue's set up is slightly similar to Ideeli, with a limited offering, but Rue is picking up some speed. Their events also generally last for 3 days or until they've sold out. They cater mostly to women and offering some home goods and travel getaways as well.

GiltGroupe (AKA Gilt): Perhaps one of the better know of the group, Gilt has widened their net, creating Jetsetter (specifically for getaway discounts), and Gilt City (for local discounts - catering to Boston, LA, Miami, NY, Chicago and SF). Although they offer a great variety of sale items, their focuses on local and getaway packages have been increasing while their fashion site hasn't. A good thing about their local sales is they offer a wait list for offerings that have sold out. Their escapes on Jetsetter are also envious. Vacation anyone?

So if you're one of the millions of people who find it better to stay in your pajamas and shop online, check out these sites. All of the ones we've listed are free to join and offer some incredible sales in the process.

I love myself some restaurant week. Actually, most of the MMC staff ♥ it just as hard as I do. So when it started rolling down the pike, we made sure to find a way to get ourselves in before the 6th. Here's a short list of some of my favorite picks.

Blue Smoke - 116 E 27th St, New York

Blue Smoke - Stopped over to Blue Smoke during the holidays and was impressed. Not only is their barbecue impressive, but their drinks are at an even keel to their food offerings. They have live jazz downstairs, which to us is an added bonus.

65 East 55th Street, New York

Aquavit - Perhaps one of the most loved amongst our group is Aquavit on 55th St. Generally we visit this fine establishment every year during their Crayfish special menu, but their other Scandinavian offers are also some of our favs. If you ever get the chance to try out their food and wine pairing menu, we strongly advise you to do so. If you can't afford it, their restaurant week menu is sure to please.

2 Park Avenue, New York

Artisanal Fromagerie & Bistro - Oh fondue, so rich, so decadent, so... FRENCH! All of us have had our own Artisanal experience and agree, this is an absolutely wonderful place to go to (their Sunday brunch menu is a favorite of Alaine's). Their restaurant week menu for brunch, lunch, and dinner, offers three courses that will certainly satisfy... and seduce you to return.

City Crab - Where can you get a two pound lobster within a three course dinner for $35 in the city? City Crab during restaurant week. This cavernous restaurant in Gramercy Park/Flatiron district offers friendly professional service with delicious seafood. It was apparent to us after our first visit why this place tends to be packed. We strongly suggest you ask your servers what they'd suggest on the menu, since they're very knowledgeable and always willing to give you their suggestions. They will not steer you wrong.

Jan Loves... "A Cappella"

NBC got on the bandwagon with their hit competition "The Sing-Off" which recently completed their 2nd season, MTV is starting to watch college a cappella competitions, and now suddenly the hobby your brother or sister got into when in college doesn't look so geeky anymore. With popular shows like Fox's "Glee" writing in their own a cappella groups, it's hard to ignore this fascinating subculture of sound.

Although popular with some college students, many post college singers have formed their own sonic communities, performing in shows and recording, going semi-pro.

I know personally because I was one of them.

I am formerly of the co-ed a cappella group The Red States (no political affiliation), which will be releasing their freshman album on the 25th of this month on iTunes (right now available for pre-order). In honor of the release, Media Mind Candy and wanted to find out from some post grads pro aca performers about their experiences and why they've always seem to find their way back "home".

I asked Jonathan Minkoff, the contratenor from the group Blue Jupiter what was his draw to the genre.

"Classic rock hits of the 70s and 80s delivered the ultimate arrangement choice with the a cappella chorus. The instruments would all drop out and a wall of pure vocal harmony would wash over the listener. Queen, Journey, Mr. Mister, Yes. They all bared laser tight harmonies to the the delight of their fans. Everyone knew this was the best part of the song.

At 14 this revelation hit me: why not do JUST the best parts? Nothing but a cappella. Decades later, it's still my favorite part!"

You'll find a lot of 80's power pop songs in contemporary a cappella. Journey, a particularly favorited group of many a cappella collectives have licensed many versions of their classics rearranged and done up in a cappella style.

However some fall into a cappella based on serendipity.

David Pinto, tenor from the group NOTA, which won the first season of the Sing-Off and just this November released their self titled album on Epic Records (available on Amazon and iTunes) spoke to me about what drew him to a cappella.

"I started singing when I was 5 years old and my dad always wanted me to learn how to play guitar or some kind of instrument...since honestly i was too lazy to learn, lol, every time I wanted to explain what I wanted to hear in a song I would just imitate the instrument or sound I was referring to with my voice. I would just start beat boxing to explain what rhythm I was trying to get. Someone told me "you should listen to these guys" and handed me a tape of this group called a cappella! I was instantly enchanted with the idea that a group of 5 guys could make music with just their voices!! Then an a cappella sensation started in Puerto Rico where I joined my first a cappella group called Alpha. That's where I met the rest of the guys I currently share this dream of making music for a living with!"

True singers tend to have a healthy respect for the genre, understanding and appreciating the complexity of the harmonies, and the delicate balance of the sound. But just like any good song, sometimes it's the match between music and lyrics that win you over. Darcy Romano Bailey, the sole female in the group Cartoon Johnny explained how it only took one song to get her hooked.

"One day our director brought in a song and said "this one should be done a cappella." The song was titled "What Would I Do Without My Music?" and was powerful and sweet (especially for those who are passionate about music). It was my first time that I was truly moved by singing a cappella and knew that there was much more exploration in this great way of singing for me! "

Nicholas Fox, aka the Human Drum Machine, who this past Summer ranked 5th in the country in the American Beatbox Championships has had many experiences with semi-pro groups and explained his reasoning behind his return to a cappella after college.

"I considered myself "good" at a cappella by the time i got through to senior year, so i wanted to keep developing the singing skill and improve myself. I wanted to run my own group and perform music that i liked -- something i didn't fully experience in college and I wanted to make friends outside of work. a cappella did the trick"

No matter what or why, the reason is pretty clear, a cappella, out of it's barbershop and du-wop roots, have seeped into the mainstream.

Jan Loves... "Thai Massage"

On a recent trip to Dusnee Thai Spa (767 Lexington Ave) I tried, for the very first time, a Thai Massage ( $90/60 min., $135/90 min.). I had seen a display of it at the last Pretty City event and decided I definitely wanted to try it.

Being an avid massage patron, I had tried shiatsu, swedish, deep tissue, reflexology, aromatherapy, reiki, cranial sacral, etc., but was fascinated at what I saw: a circuit of yoga-like assisted stretches to relieve tension? Ok, I'm up for it. Bring it on!

Just to give you a lowdown, Thai massage uses a mix of deep tissue massage with assisted yoga-like stretches. This assists in two main ways:

1. It puts your body parts in the right position to get to tight muscles,

2. It stretches parts of the body to alleviate tension,

Like yoga or tai chi, there is a focus on the breath during several poses, where you are asked to breath in prior to the pose, and very often, when the body is receiving pressure, the air is expelled out of the lungs (voluntarily, of course).

There's no oil involved and very little skin contact, however you will be asked to change into a robe.

What you're left feeling is relaxed and peaceful (at least I was) with very little soreness.

A few things you should remember though when you're going for a massage:

1. There's a difference between bad pain and good pain. One feel like it's trying to get a knot out, the other feels like something's wrong. If that's the case, let your practitioner know. They can only be as effective as the info you give them.

2. In respect to Thai massage, be honest with them in regards to your flexibility level. They'll ask you beforehand, but this isn't a challenge about whether or not your yoga classes have made you super flexible. I told them I was a "4" in a level of 1 - 10 and they made sure not to put me in poses that I wasn't ready for.

3. When you start to feel the good pain, don't hold your breath. Exhale as you feel the practitioner doing their thing to work it out. Outside of being a good thing to do, exhaling helps in reducing the pain and helps to work out the blockages that might be causing the tension.

4. And last, but not least, tip your practitioner. Unless they have a rule against it (always ask the establishment first), you should always tip your practitioner more than the 15%. Generally I pay 20% - 25%. The reason being is that, unlike waiters, masseuse focuses on you for the entire duration of the massage rather than periodically. Because there's so much attention paid to you during your visit, it stands to reason, 20% is the least you can give to say "thank you".

Chameleon - the experience of global citizens

My dance company has been invited to perform, teach, and lead discussions about global citizenship at Utahloy International School in Guangzhou, China. However, we need to raise between $10k-$20k to bring a cast & crew of 5-8 people (dependent upon how much money we raise and can afford to bring). So we need your help.

So many of you know this year for my birthday I flew out to Colombia. It hasn't been a month since, but the one thing I learned not to take for granted was my air. It's the little things like that you come to realize are so important until you find it missing from your life.

The other thing that I found in rare quantity was water.

Although we New Yorkers tend to bitch about our quality of water, the water that comes out of our facets are actually clean enough to drink. While I was out in Bogota, getting tap water wasn't really possible. All restaurants serve bottled water and the water I did try to get out of the tap wasn't something I'd readily consume.

I didn't think much of it, because it was something normal when I traveled outside the country. Don't drink the tap water. But even though their water is somewhat consumable in small amounts, there are many parts of the country where the water is not. (Read More...)

Haters being released as it's own offical single

There's a weird story behind this song. We were supposed to release the song and video earlier this year, but because of some strange hiccups, it didn't happen. Some of them included:

The label not being responsive when we requested the remixes of the song.
The first director of the video dropping out a week prior to filming.
The camera dying inexplicably before the video shoot.
The second director being unresponsive when we attempted to get the video.
And the director disappearing when we requested the back the filmed footage so we could edit it.

As stressed and Lovari was in respect to the entire process, there were a lot of things going on on my end that I decided not to stress it. This included recording the first Red States album and working on creating a new a cappella R&B group called Common Ground.

American Beatbox Championships - This Weekend (Who Will Be the Victor?)

You can almost hear the arcade announcer's voice call out...

"FIGHT!"

Nick Fox, aka Human Drum Machine came into The American Beatbox Championships with the mind set that this was going to be a battle and he'd best bring his A-Game, which is not surprising for this performer who has been beat boxing since his college days singing with the NYU a cappella group Mass Transit.

In years since his graduation, he's been in award winning groups such as Undercover and Kelso, and has continued to perform with indie artists.

We wanted to get a little insight on this beat boxing madman and his thoughts about the upcoming finals this weekend at Littlefield.

Tell us what got you into beat boxing?

I was actually forced into beatboxing. in my college a cappella group there were no other beatboxers left at one point but me, so it fell on my shoulders. after watching the wes carroll learn to mouthdrum DVDs, my abilities took flight and here I am today, lovin' the task I was at one point merely consigned to by fate.

What made you want to take on this challenge?

I set a new year's resolution to get more active in the beatbox community and take part in more competitions. this was pretty much exactly what I wished for!

Is it difficult to hold a day job and still have time to do what you love?

it's endlessly frustrating, for all the reasons you would imagine. oftentimes i have to make a choice between career and passion. at the same time, while i'd like to think i could survive on my art alone, i'm glad to have a day job that supports the art -- beatboxing is the one thing i can immediately think of that i can always take with me wherever i go, professionally or not.

Who inspired you?

inspired me to beatbox? every time i see something new on youtube or facebook, something that takes the beatbox world in a new direction, something a cappella that prudces great music just from the mouth, i'm inspired to do even more.

What would you tell others who wanted to get into beat boxing that nobody told you?

listening to real drummers makes you a better beatboxer. who knew? instead of immersing myself into hip hop and rahzel and fat boys records for months (an admittedly foreign language) i could have been practicing drum riffs from my favorite classic rock and jazz artists and have gained the much-valued skill of diversity. also -- i wish someone had told me how to deal with sound equipment long ago. it can make or break a show and it's something i've had to learn the hard way. your microphone is your instrument too, when it's there -- learn how to make it your slave!

We know you're on a budget. We get that. The city does too. So if you're missing some face time, or at least are looking a bit pale, head to either Bryant, Brooklyn Bridge, or Central Park for their Summer movie series. Grab a blanket, some sandwiches, and a bottle or two of water (or wine, but hide the wine) and grab your friends, your sweeties, or yourself and head on out. Get there early to make sure you get the best seats of the house.

Bryant Park's HBO Summer Film Festival kicked off last night with the James Bond classic Goldfinger. They'll continue to play every Monday at sundown until August 23rd. Some of the classics they'll be playing include Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The French Connection, Rosemary's Baby, and Twelve Angry Men. Also please note, if you want a seat on the lawn, be prepared to have your bags checked upon arrival.

If classics aren't really your thing, you do have other options. Brooklyn runs their own event at Brooklyn Bridge Park, which doesn't really kick off till the beginning of July.

Movies with a View presented by Syfy brings you a lot of the more recent pics, without the extravagant ticket price. Some of the films on this year's list include: Monsters and Aliens in 3D, Brokeback Mountain, Dreamgirls, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Generally they have light food available for purchase and in our opinion, is a really sweet date spot.

If you don't want to leave the city, you can always go to Central Park and catch their film festival. The Central Park Film Festival happens every year, traditionally on Rumsey Field (E 72nd off 5th Ave) and generally happens mid August. Unfortunately the listing of this year's films have not been added to their website, however some of last year's films included Shaft, Oceans 11, Men in Black, and Twilight.

If a sedentary lifestyle is not what you'd prefer, there's always dancing. With the warm weather, you will find more and more people coming out to dance their behinds off. Here are a few free parties to consider dancing the night away.

Water Taxi Beach is partnering with Dance.Here.Now to offer some great DJ events at both their Queens and South Street Seaport locations. If you want in for free, head to their events on Sunday before 3PM and be part of the party.

If you're into something more in the swing, check out Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night's Swing. Learn how to hustle, swing, tango, or two-step during this festival. Although former training with their dance instructors and getting closer to the stage requires you to pay $25, the event happens in the plaza and is open to the public. If you don't mind hanging on the sidelines, you still get an awesome party and live music.

Stuffed and Unstrung - Puppets on the Edge

Out of the rare occasion, inspiration hits me to do something out of left field. I heard about a company off-shoot of the Jim Henson company called "Henson Alternative" which is adult based material performed by Henson puppets and their puppeteers, and lo and behold, they have a show going on at the Union Square Theater called Stuffed and Unstrung, an off the wall improv audience participation show.

Hosted by Patrick Bristow, the show reminds you of a "Who's Line is it Anyway", where the audience suggests topics for the next sketch and it's up to the puppeteers to figure out how to make the subject work with their puppets in hand. Impromptu musical numbers arise on occasion and all topic suggestions come up with brilliant results.

There are multiple screens also around the stage and two large projection screens by the stage so you can see what it would look like if they were merely doing it for the screen. It's like getting your own backstage pass to your favorite childhood puppet show.

About my favorite thing about this show is the fact that you actually get to see the puppeteers and how they work. It's also interesting to see that the puppeteers actually facially get into it. Granted, that may be because they're now visible, but it's interesting how into it they get.

During the performance, they also recreate old performances from Frank Oz and Jim Henson's early works, which are a lot of fun to watch, and toward the end you get to see one of their animated puppetry set up at work.

If you get a chance, come check them out tonight. Tonight they're offering a "pay your age" night. So head over to the box office, show them your ID and whatever your age is will be your ticket price! (taxes may apply)

Review: Chameleon - A.H. Dance Company

If you don't know what a TCK is, it's fairly simple. TCK is short for Third Culture Kid, which generally means someone who is of one ethnicity born or raised in more than two different cultures. Meaning if you were born in the states, but grew up in Tokyo, then in Malaysia, then Australia, then France. Although not labeled previously, these experiences are now being captured and brought to life through the multimedia experience "Chameleon": incorporating modern dance, film, and spoken word.

The piece, which includes 8 stanzas, follows the experiences of several TCK, with performers who are all TCK's themselves, sharing some of their experiences they've had growing up not having a physical home or set culture.

Rich with experience, both interviewees and dancers share their stories of how it felt like to be a chameleon, to blend in with new societies and people, and in many ways, how their environment also took them in as well.

I got to see Gerald Casel Dance at St Marks Church in the E. Village on opening night. I don't want to say too much about the performance so here are a few words about his two premieres of Fluster and Plot.

Despite three male dancers dancing in this piece, the movements had a very light and playful feeling. No sound came from their feet. A deliberate nonchalant quality approach to each movement. The carefree "skipping through a field" was enhanced by the sound by Matthew Meade and Kyle Olson, there were sounds of wind chimes at one point. My favorite moment came during Casel's mini solo segment, his solo had a lot of weight bearing dynamic punctuated by dragging of the legs, deep lunges, long drawn out pauses in deep plié. The music changes that occurred created a different environment and the movement became heavier, more partnering, more contrasting dynamics in level changes, speed, and overall feeling. Casel really found a narrative within this abstract piece entirely using movement patterns.

Submitting a resume isn't rocket science, it's common sense. Then again, if it was so common there wouldn't be bad job submissions and everyone would be working...

Then again, not everyone thinks before they submit their resume.

Certain things to keep in mind when you are submitting your resume.

Actually HAVE a resume! - I don't care what kind of job it is. It could be for carpentry, for a porter position, for a superintendent job, HAVE A RESUME! Your word of mouth means less than a listing of the jobs you've had. It's a way for us to see your work history and a way of verifying if you're right for the job.
Always add a contact number in your resume. - If it's an attachment in an email, add a contact number on to your resume. If your resume is copy and pasted on your email, ADD YOUR CONTACT NUMBER! You want a interview, give us a way to contact you.
Use Spell Check! - You're using most likely a form of microsoft word, then press the "F7" button and go to town. It's not rocket science.
Have it legible. - Don't use a tiny font because it looks cool. If I can't read it, it will go into the garbage. That's it.
Put what job you're replying to on the subject line. - If you don't make clear what you want, no one can help you. Generally companies will have more than one position pen and if you don't clarify which one you want, your efforts will lead to the reject pile.
Put your past job positions on your resume. - You had a name for your position, so put on.
Edit your Experience. - If you double as a carpenter and as a stock broker, I don't need to hear about your carpenter experience if you're submitting a job to JP Morgan Chase, and visa versa if you're submitting for a job as a carpenter. I only want to read on your resume your relevant experience. If your experience impresses me, let me know in the interview why you have gaps, otherwise I don't need a twelve page resume on info when the relevant info would have filled only three.
Add a skill list. - I need to see what kind of databases you've worked with. I need to know you type 60. I need to know you know your way around electrical wiring, I need to know if you have any experience with accounting software, and if you do, which ones. If you don't tell me any of these things, I'm going to go to the next guy or gal who does.
NEVER put your SS# on your resume. - If they ask for it, let them know you will have it available for them upon hire, otherwise don't give the number out.

Employers vs. Recruiter

There are certain things recruiters look for that employers don't really give a rats ass about. Keep these things in mind when you're submitting your resume.

Objective and goals: Recruiters (aka. agencies, head hunters, etc.) care about what you put into this field. Potential employers don't really give a damn. Employers want to know you're capable for the job and see you submitting for the job as "your objective is to get the job I'm offering". Recruiters deal with several clients, so this field helps them get you work and them paid.
To Cover Letter or to Not Cover Letter. - Most employers are too busy to bother reading the cover letter. Unless requested, a cover letter is a formality best sent to the recruiter, however if you're focused on getting a certain price range, your cover letter will be your negotiating price tag. Don't set it to "just enough", always set it in the high range for your field.
Touching base? - Great with recruitment agencies, good with small companies, bad for big companies. Most often, in large companies, it's the temp or an intern that's sorting through all the resumes. In other words, make your resume count.

Review of "Proximity Spiral" Rehearsals

To be great you must practice, practice, practice until you are perfect. With the detailed direction of Stefanie Nelson of "Stefanie Nelson Dancegroup", the group of 8 dancers including: Malinda Crump, Katie Federowicz, Jeffrey Kent Jacobs, McKay Montz, Matthew Oaks, Ali Schechter, Ariana Siegel and Yin Yue, are all bound for perfection opening night, March 18th, 2010, 8pm @ Joyce Soho located at 155 Mercer Street in Soho, New York City.

From the time you approach the theater doors, you will realize you are in for an interesting treat. On the way, I got lost for a bit, Joyce Soho has what looks like a big garage door with Plexiglass windows in front, so look out. Upon entering the rehearsal, I was greeted by a very friendly smile and a warm welcome from director Stefanie Nelson and her cast. Before rehearsals began, many of the dancers were ironing out certain kinks in the performance before their rehearsal showtime.

While watching the 60 minute rehearsal, I can imagine that during the live performance the audience will be taken on a dark epic journey with a musical soundtrack that can send chills up your spine. A kaleidoscope of body movements, each dancer practically throws him or herself around like rag doll, and the performance is nothing short of the title, "Proximity Spiral". "Proximity Spiral" is like something I have never seen before, and in mean that in a good way.

As the show goes on, you may catch yourself waiting for your favorite dancer(s) to come back center stage. Never knowing what to expect next, the group of dancers perform a cohesive sequence of Avant-Garde dance art with commitment, grace and a haunting soundtrack to boot. Even though this was only a rehearsal, I would definitely recommend you and friends to pay and see "Proximity Spiral" during it's run. From what I saw today, this show has GREAT promise to be something very special to witness. Go witness this show!

There's No Time Limit for Giving

It's been close to two weeks since devastation struck Haiti and it seems in regards to relief, such news outlets such as CNN and others are reporting the outpouring of help being extended to the region, to the extent of the local airport being bombarded with supplies.

Of course this is a wonderful thing, however it seems as if most of America has decided the news of the moment is over, Haiti is getting it's relief, and have flipped the proverbial channel.

Please don't. There's still a lot to be done.

A friend of ours at the MMC was recently in Haiti helping in the relief effort and his story upon his return was both rough and heartbreaking. Extreme amputations done because there weren't enough proper supplies to prevent infection, rampant chaos because there was no chain in command, and this is on top of no clean water and lack of supplies. Although some forms ofcommunications are presently back up and running in Haiti, the fact remains, there is still a lot to be done.

Another point that was made recently in regards to some of the charities, was whether the money donated were actually going to the benefit. You should always use digression when it comes to where you send your money. I asked this of our friend and he said one of the organizations he saw working around the clock was the PAHO (Pan American Health Organization). They have been assisting with the relief efforts since the weekend of the earthquake and have been helping ever since.

So what if it's been close to two weeks since the crisis? I personally remember living through 9/11 in New York and even though we have rebuilt for the most part, devastations whether man made or natural are never quickly expunged away. In other words, it will be a while till everything is close to normal, so help will be greatly appreciated, whether now, or a month from now.

For example, one of the a cappella groups I'm in The Red States (No Political Affiliation) will be performing with another a cappella group Duwende on Friday, Feb. 19th to benefit the relief efforts in Haiti. No word yet on venue or cover charge (check either band website or twitter for details). Even though we couldn't get something immediately together, we are doing something.

Don't let time make your choices for you. Even if there aren't any natural or man made disaster going on, you shouldn't let that be the reason for offering up some help.

What have you done to help out the relief effort or any other situation going on in the world around you? Can you offer any advise for those who wish to help?

Editorial: Living Off The Limb...

It seems in life, many people spend time trying to be 'normal'. Some people take on jobs and lovers because society says so. Some men marry women when then know they prefer men and many women exceed their income to 'fit-in'. When did going out on the limb to pursue personal desires become so obsolete?

For as long as I can remember, I have been in long-term relationships. As one relationship would end, I would start another, adapting to the person's lifestyle and happiness. My perceptions were that 'normal' people are in relationships, if not , what's wrong with me? I would even base my career decisions on whether it would fit into the other person's life and their desires for a specific type of lover. Now, I am at a crossroads, do I step out in faith of my desires? Do I play 'normal' and stay sedentary?

Shirley Maclaine, an actress, once was quoted saying, "Don't be afraid to go out on a limb, it's where all the fruit is." That statement is so profound when it comes to one's true happiness. Many people play it safe and look for security in things that have no more security than any other opportunity. Life tends to pass those by who are waiting for something bigger.

It seems that in life, there really is no true security and the only security we can depend on is our own distinct happiness. Some of the 'normal' people ridicule others who make choices against the grain. They throw stones and gossip behind the person's back. What's most interesting is that the so called 'normal' people are some of the saddest people, you may ever meet.

The outcasts, misfits and socially unjustified, are some of the most heart warming people I have met in my life. The very people, most expect to flake, have turned out to be some of greatest people who ever walked the earth. There is so much integrity in people who follow their own desires. There is something to be said about the person who marches to their own band. There is something to be said about the person who would rather bet on himself, than any exterior element.

If living out on the limb is where humans can find happiness, than I'm ready. No longer should people put their innate desires on the back burner because mom and dad or boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife thinks the idea is crazy. People's lives have changed dramatically for the better because they decided to do something different, out on a limb.

It seems living on a limb is not as bad as it seems, you get spectacular views, fresh air and plenty of time to think in the serenity of your natural bliss. When it comes to fulfilling your own happiness, are you betting on or against yourself? Do your bones come alive from your choices? Sometimes the easiest route is not always the best. Are you out on the limb? If so, that's where all the fruit is!

Editorial: The New Social Consiousness of Fashion

During the late 60's into early 70's, the hippies were the ones running the show. With their peace, love and harmony credo, they spoke of independence, love, and the return to nature. Decades later, the children from that generation are now business mavens working back the trend, focusing on environmentally friendly works, whether it be alternative fuel sources, recycling, or in this current case: fashion.

In the last five to ten years, fashion in clothing, accessories, and make-up, have geared themselves toward more natural, or at least, environmentally friendly alternatives, bringing with it natural make-up, recycled plastics in the form of fleece, and as of late, vegan clothing. Synthetic furs, once considered low brow are now a hot commodity in fur vests and trim, used as a animal friendly option. Mineral make-up, which was once sold at a premium at department stores and boutiques, can now be found in your local drug store in the beauty isle. And now companies are going one step further, going vegan from everything from tops to boots, and unlike our fashion hippie forebearors, the style isn't homemade, but mass manufactured for the masses.

Could it be that those now in the movers and shakers seats were once the children that were born or grew up in that generation of tree huggers and the ecologically sensitive? Well, who knows, but vendors from JCPenny to Old Navy and Covergirl to Sephora now include ecologically conscious items into their sales shelf, although not necessarily in bold when it comes to their clothing, certainly when it comes to their makeup.

Tarte Cosmetics: We love Tarte (particularly after we tried and bought their holiday gift set) not only because they are "...free of parabens, petro-chemicals, phthalates, sulfates and synthetic fragrances", as per their website, but because their color palates are gorgeous, and because their make-up is great.
